Representation of CARITAS and Austrian Medical Chamber in Sri Lanka

NEXUS experts represent CARITAS Austria and the Austrian Medical Chamber in Sri Lanka and provide support in the following areas:

Mother & Child Programme

Due to a variety of complex social reasons Nuvara Eliya represents one of the districts in Sri Lanka with the highest maternal and infant death rates. NEXUS was requested by the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka and CARITAS Austria to act as interlocutor in addressing this issue. Based on a NEXUS assessment the project focused on providing training to public health midwives, health volunteer workers and medical staff on specific issues of mother and child care.

Additionally educational materials for pregnant women and their families were produced addressing issues of nutrition, hygienic care, basic screening skills of main signs of illness and basic family planning issues. In parallel, refurbishment of health institutions and specific procurement of required equipment took place.

Upgrading Embilipitiya Hospital

In the aftermath of the 2005-Tsunami, NEXUS was tasked by CARITAS Austria to identify and implement a medical assistance programme in Sri Lanka. Together with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health, WHO and the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the Hospital in Embilipitiya was selected for upgrading. In this context, NEXUS represented the interest of its clients in sucessfully delivering the following projects:

Medical Exchange Programme Austria - Sri Lanka

Within the framework of the medical exchange programme, NEXUS acts as interlocutor for the Austrian Medical Chamber. The exchange project employs Austrian specialist doctors in Sri Lanka. In return the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health will second Sri Lankan medical professionals to Austria, where they will receive training in the field of health management.
